You’ll ride over frozen sea in a hovercraft or icebreaker boat, walk on solid sea ice, and float safely among ice rafts in a survival suit. It’s not every day you get to eat by an open fire on an empty island outside Helsinki—this is winter adventure with real local flavor.
The first thing I noticed was the crunch of snow under my boots as we left the city behind. Our guide steered us out from Helsinki’s east side—just past where the tram lines end—into a world that felt completely silent except for the low hum of the hovercraft. The air smelled sharp and clean, and you could see your breath hanging in little clouds. Sometimes, if the ice wasn’t thick enough, we’d switch to a steel boat that actually broke through the ice sheets with this deep, echoing sound you feel in your chest.
I’ll admit, pulling on that bright orange survival suit felt a bit awkward at first. But once zipped up, it was surprisingly warm—like wearing a sleeping bag. Floating among the ice rafts is something I never thought I’d do; you just lean back and let yourself drift while chunks of sea ice bob around you. Some folks even tried running across floating slabs (not as easy as it looks!). Afterward, we gathered around an open fire on one of the islands for grilled sausages and strong coffee—the kind that warms your hands as much as your insides. There’s nothing quite like eating outdoors when everything’s so still and white.
It’s best for adults and older kids who are comfortable with cold weather and can fit into the survival suits. Feel free to ask about age limits when booking.
