Step into Lalibela’s world of ancient rock-hewn churches with a local guide who shares stories you won’t find in any book. Watch a real religious ceremony alongside local families, explore hidden corners carved from solid stone, and enjoy an overnight stay with breakfast included. This journey is all about slowing down and feeling history come alive around you.
Landing in Lalibela after a short flight from Addis, I felt the air shift—cooler, almost still, with that faint scent of earth you only get in the highlands. Our guide met us right outside the airport, and we drove past small clusters of stone houses before reaching town. After checking in and grabbing a quick coffee, we set out to see the famous rock-hewn churches. Walking through Bet Medhane Alem’s stone columns, I could hear quiet footsteps echoing off the walls while our guide explained how this place was carved straight from the mountain centuries ago.
We moved between church groups—the Northern, Western, and Eastern clusters—each with its own story. At Bete Giyorgis, sunlight slipped through the narrow entrance and lit up dust motes hanging in the air. Some locals passed by in white shawls, humming softly as they headed to pray. Our guide pointed out tiny details: faded crosses etched into corners, a spot where pilgrims touch the wall for luck. There was no rush; we took time to just stand and listen to the silence inside these cool stone rooms.
The next morning started early. We joined local families at one of Lalibela’s main churches for Sabbath prayers. The sound of chanting drifted outside as people gathered—some barefoot on smooth stones, others clutching prayer books worn soft at the edges. By 10am it was time to head back to the airport, but even then I kept thinking about those quiet moments inside the churches and how different everything felt compared to anywhere else I’d been.
