What’s the experience like?

“You see those clouds? That’s the ocean trying to sneak into the valley,” our guide Mark grinned as we stepped out at Best Of All Lookout. He was right — the air up there tasted cold and green, and I could smell wet earth under the old Antarctic beeches. The wind was louder than I expected, flapping my jacket as I tried to catch a photo that did any justice to that view (I failed). Someone next to me just stood quietly, hands in pockets, not even bothering with their phone. I get it now.

The drive from Gold Coast only took about 45 minutes but it felt like we’d landed somewhere far older. Mark pointed out tree ferns and some tiny birds whose names I immediately forgot (sorry Mark). The path down to Natural Bridge was soft with leaf litter, and when we reached the cave, all of us went quiet for a second — just water echoing off stone and that weirdly sweet smell you get near waterfalls. I tried to say “Natural Bridge” in my best Aussie accent; someone laughed. It echoed too.

Canyon Lookout gave us a peek at Rainbow Falls and Twin Falls — both looked thin from a distance but you could hear them if you listened past the wind. The group was small enough that nobody felt rushed; Mark let us wander or ask questions (someone asked about glow worms — apparently they’re around at night). We had snacks back at the van, nothing fancy but honestly after walking in that cool air even an apple tasted sharper. On the way back I kept thinking about how old those forests felt. Not sure why that sticks with me.
