What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to be laughing about crocodiles before lunch, but that’s how our afternoon started out of Port Douglas. The Captain Cook Highway was all sugarcane fields and sudden flashes of blue sky — our guide, Jamie, tossed in stories about old explorers and local quirks. I half-listened, half-watched the clouds shift over the hills. When we reached the Daintree River, the air felt heavy and sweet, like wet leaves after rain. You could smell it even before stepping off the bus.

The river cruise was quieter than I’d pictured — just a handful of us with cold drinks in hand (I picked ginger beer; someone else went for wine). Jamie pointed out a fat estuarine crocodile sunning itself on the bank. “He’s called Scarface,” she said, grinning. There were kingfishers darting low over the water, and I swear I heard frogs somewhere under all that green noise. I tried to get a photo but mostly ended up with blurry branches. So yeah, not exactly National Geographic material on my end.

Mossman Gorge was next — you could hear the water before you saw it. The boardwalk felt springy underfoot, damp from last night’s rain. Jamie knew every tree by name (I forgot most of them instantly), but what stuck with me was how she showed us tiny marks where butterflies had chewed through leaves. We stopped for ages just watching light flicker through the canopy. A couple of us braved the stream; it was colder than I thought — sharp and clean against my skin. My toes went numb but I couldn’t stop grinning.

On the way back to Port Douglas, everyone was quiet in that good way — tired but sort of lit up inside. Even now, weeks later, sometimes I remember that cold water and those lazy crocs baking in the sun.
