experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the Nile to be so quiet at night. Our driver picked us up from the hotel in Aswan just after sunset — the city was still buzzing, but as soon as we reached the marina, everything felt softer. The boat ride to Agilkia Island was short, maybe ten minutes, but I remember the smell of river water and diesel mixing in the air. There was this older man steering the boat who nodded at us — didn’t say much, just smiled. I tried to ask him how many times he’d done this crossing, but my Arabic is basically nonexistent. He laughed anyway.

Walking up to Philae Temple in the dark is something else. The columns looked taller than I imagined, shadows stretching everywhere. Our local guide handed us these little audio devices — not fancy headphones or anything — and told us to follow the lights. The sound & light show started almost suddenly: voices echoing off stone, stories about Isis and Osiris that felt half-dreamlike under all those stars. There were flashes of green and gold across the carvings; sometimes you could see dust swirling in the beams. It’s weird how you can feel alone and surrounded at the same time in a place like that.

I kept thinking about how they moved this whole temple stone by stone because of flooding — our guide explained it like it was just another fact of life here. “Egyptians are used to moving things,” he joked, which made everyone laugh even though it’s kind of wild when you think about it. Afterward, we drifted back across the water in silence except for one kid who kept asking his dad if Isis was a real person (the dad just shrugged). Back at the hotel, I realized I’d barely taken any photos — sometimes you just want to keep something for yourself, you know?
