What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned vehicle, all entry fees (including access to Queen Hetepheres’ pyramid), bottled water throughout, a 30-minute camel ride near Giza’s pyramids, plus an Egyptian lunch if you select that option when booking—before returning to your hotel in Cairo at sunset or whenever your feet give up first.

The first thing I remember is the sand—soft but gritty under my shoes—and the way the light hit the Pyramids of Giza just after we stepped out of the car. Our guide, Youssef, handed me a bottle of water and grinned like he’d seen this moment a thousand times. It’s hard to describe standing in front of something that old. The Sphinx was smaller than I’d pictured, but somehow more mysterious—its face half-shadowed in the morning haze. We climbed onto camels (I was nervous; my partner laughed at how awkward I looked), and for half an hour it felt like we were floating through time. The air smelled dusty and warm. Somewhere behind us, someone called out in Arabic and I still wonder what they were saying.

After we ducked inside the Pyramid of Queen Hetepheres—cool stone walls, echoing footsteps—I realized how quiet it gets away from the crowds. Youssef told us stories about Khufu’s mother while we tried not to bump our heads on the low ceiling. Lunch came later: simple grilled chicken with tahini and flatbread at a place that didn’t look like much from outside but tasted better than anything back home. Maybe it was just being hungry after all that walking, or maybe food really does taste different in Cairo. Either way, I can still smell the cumin on my fingers.

Islamic Cairo felt like another world entirely. Al-Muizz Street buzzed with people selling brass lamps and sweets; every corner seemed to hide a mosque or an old gate. We wandered into Al-Hakim Mosque—bare feet on cool marble—and stood in silence for a minute because it just felt right. Later, at Khan El Khalili bazaar, I tried bargaining for a tiny silver pendant (failed spectacularly) while Youssef chatted with one of his friends over tea. The market smells—coffee roasting somewhere close by, perfume oils, fried dough—mixed together until I couldn’t tell one from another. By then my feet hurt but I didn’t really want to leave yet.
