What’s included

Salt clung to my lips as we zipped across the water, the boat’s hull slapping out a steady rhythm. Our guide, Diego, handed out gear with a grin—he’s lived here his whole life and knows every nook of these volcanic tunnels. The air smelled faintly of seaweed and sunscreen. As we slowed near Los Tuneles, the water turned glassy-clear, revealing shadows darting below—sea turtles, rays, and, if you’re lucky, a lazy reef shark or two.

We slipped into the water, and right away I spotted a seahorse clinging to a bit of coral—so tiny I almost missed it. Sea lions zipped past, playful as ever, blowing bubbles that tickled my arms. After snorkeling, we walked along the lava arches where blue-footed boobies nest. Their feet really are that blue, and their courtship dance is something else—lots of shuffling and whistling. You’ll hear it before you see them. Lunch was simple but fresh: local fish and sweet plantains, eaten with salty hair and sun-warmed skin.
