Summary

Fireflies, alligators & glass bridge moments in Limoncocha

You’ll step into Nueva Loja’s lively parks and cross the Aguarico River’s glass bridge before drifting through Limoncocha’s lagoon at sunset. With local guides leading you to Ecuador’s only firefly sanctuary and spotting black alligators by boat, you’ll end your day sharing stories over dinner — probably still glowing from those firefly lights.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled into Nueva Loja just as the afternoon heat was starting to let up. Our guide, Diego, waved us over at the tourist park — he had this easy way of making everyone feel like they belonged there, even though I still felt pretty out of place. The city was louder than I expected, kids running around and some old cumbia from a shop radio mixing with bird calls. We joined a group learning about the province’s different animal species; I fumbled my Spanish but nobody seemed to mind. There was this one moment where a local woman handed me a carved wooden toucan — it smelled faintly of resin and smoke. I didn’t expect that part.

After that we headed for the Aguarico River. The glass bridge looked almost unreal against the muddy water below — you could see straight through your feet to the river (which made my knees wobble a bit). Some teenagers were daring each other to jump up and down on the glass panels; Diego just grinned and told us stories about floods and how people cross when it rains. The air was thick but not unpleasant, kind of earthy-sweet after the sun started dropping.

But honestly, nothing prepared me for Limoncocha’s firefly lagoon at night. As dusk settled in, we got life jackets on and climbed into a boat — there was this hush over everyone, like we all knew something rare was about to happen. The water was flat as glass except for our ripples. Suddenly these tiny lights started flickering everywhere along the shore — hundreds of fireflies blinking in patterns I couldn’t follow. Someone whispered “look!” when a black alligator slid silently past our boat; I barely breathed until it vanished again. My phone photos are useless but I still think about that view sometimes, how unreal it felt sitting there in near-darkness with strangers who somehow felt like friends by then.
