experience

What’s the experience like?

“If you want to know how we really live, you have to taste the fruit at the market,” José said as he handed me a slice of mango sticky with juice. I was still trying to wipe my hands when a woman behind the stall started laughing and offered napkins — I guess tourists always make a mess. The market was noisy and warm, with voices bouncing off piles of avocados and bananas. It’s not just sightseeing; you’re actually in it, right there with everyone doing their daily thing. I didn’t expect to feel so much part of it.

Our guide José seemed to know everyone — or maybe everyone just likes him. He led us past pastel Victorian houses that looked like they’d been painted for a festival, even though it was just Tuesday. We stopped at the Amber Museum (the main keyword slipped in here), where sunlight hit those ancient stones and made them glow weirdly gold. After that came the fort — Fort San Felipe — which smells faintly salty from the sea air and has walls thick enough to block out most sounds except your own footsteps echoing around. I liked that quiet moment more than I thought I would.

The Calle de las Sombrillas was next: umbrellas overhead, all those colors popping against the sky. Kids were taking photos under them while someone sold little cups of coconut ice cream nearby (I got one; it melted fast). Lunch was at this family-run spot where they brought out plates of rice, beans, fried plantains — everything served like you’re eating at someone’s house. Cold Presidente beer on the table, fans spinning lazily above us. Then we tried rum at Macorix (I’m not a big drinker but wow), and watched cigars being rolled by hand at Emmanuel Cigar Factory. Li laughed when I tried to say “puros” in Spanish — probably butchered it.

There’s a lot packed into this private Puerto Plata city tour but nothing felt rushed. You can pick what you want to see or skip; José just rolls with it. At the end we stopped by the seawall for Atlantic breezes and that view toward Neptune Rock — blue water stretching forever. I still think about how open people were here, how quick they are to share a story or a smile. Maybe that’s what stuck most.
