You’ll paddle right through Prague’s heart by canoe or paddleboard with a local guide, passing castles and famous bridges while spotting birds—and probably getting soaked along the way. Expect laughter, some teamwork, plenty of stories from your crew, and moments where you see the city in a way most visitors never do.
I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel nervous about a canoe in the middle of Prague. But there I was on Císařská louka Island, squinting at the Vltava and listening to our guide (Tomas? Tomasz? I’m still not sure) explain how not to end up swimming. He grinned a lot—one of those people who makes you feel like you’re already friends. The air smelled faintly of river mud and sunscreen. I guess that’s summer here.
We set off paddling past the Vyšehrad Castle, which looks even more dramatic from water level. The city sounds faded behind us—just a couple of ducks arguing somewhere close by and the hollow thunk of my paddle against the side. Tomas kept tossing out stories about bridges and buildings; some were probably true, some maybe not. At one point he pointed out a kingfisher darting by—I missed it completely but pretended I saw it anyway. My arms started to ache after twenty minutes but honestly, it felt good to move.
Somewhere near the Dancing House, someone in another canoe tipped over (not me this time). Everyone laughed—including them—and Tomas was already there helping before they’d even finished spluttering. You do get wet on this tour; my shorts never really dried out but it didn’t matter. There’s something about seeing Prague from down low on the water that makes all the postcard photos seem flat now. I still think about that view under Charles Bridge as we drifted quietly for a minute—just us and a couple of swans gliding by like they owned the place.
