If you want to see Monteverde’s famous birds up close—with real chances for quetzals and toucans—this early morning walk is worth it. You’ll get expert tips from a local guide, enjoy quiet trails before the crowds arrive, and leave with new stories (and probably some great photos).
There’s something about the air in Monteverde just after sunrise—cool, a little damp, and full of birdsong. We met our guide near the Ficus Trails entrance, coffee still warming my hands. He gave us a quick rundown of what we might see—over 450 species call this place home, and honestly, you never know what’ll show up. The group was small enough that everyone could hear the guide’s stories (and his uncanny ability to mimic a toucan call).
The trails wind through thick forest where sunlight filters down in patches. Every few minutes, our guide would pause and point out flashes of color—a hummingbird hovering so close I heard its wings buzz, or a pair of emerald toucanets squabbling over fruit. At one bend, he motioned for silence; we watched a resplendent quetzal (in season) glide onto a mossy branch. Not every day you get that lucky.
We stopped at a clearing where the forest opened up just enough for photos—no rush here, just time to watch and listen. The smell of wet earth mixed with wildflowers hung in the air. Our guide answered questions about migration patterns and even showed us how to spot nests tucked high above the path. By the end, I’d filled my camera roll and learned more than I expected about conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

Absolutely! All ages and experience levels are welcome. The pace is relaxed and our guides make it easy to follow along.
We can’t guarantee specific sightings since wildlife is unpredictable, but our guides do their best to spot as many species as possible each day.
We keep groups small for a more personal experience—usually no more than 8 people per guide.
