If you want to see monkeys swinging overhead or spot sloths tucked in the trees, this guided hike through Gandoca-Manzanillo is for you. You’ll explore both jungle trails and quiet beaches with an expert local guide—and maybe even taste some fresh fruit along the way.
The morning air felt thick and sweet as we hopped out of the van at Gandoca-Manzanillo. Our guide, José, handed each of us a pair of binoculars—he joked they were “sloth detectors.” Right away, you could hear the howler monkeys somewhere above, their calls echoing through the trees. The path started off muddy (bring shoes you don’t mind getting dirty), but that’s just part of jungle life here.
We moved slowly, eyes peeled for movement. José pointed out a bright green basilisk lizard sunning itself on a log—he called it the “Jesus Christ lizard” because it can run across water. In the canopy, spider monkeys swung between branches while toucans flashed yellow and black overhead. Sometimes you catch a whiff of salt from the sea mixed with earthy leaves; it’s a strange but good combo.
Halfway through, we stopped for fresh pineapple slices under a giant almond tree near the beach. The sand was warm and soft—one of those moments where you just want to sit and listen to the waves and distant bird calls. On our way back along the coast path, we spotted a sleepy sloth curled up high in a cecropia tree (José found it first—he always does). If you’re into wildlife and don’t mind a bit of sweat and mud, this hike really gets you close to Costa Rica’s wild side.
The trail has some muddy spots and uneven ground but most people with average fitness can handle it. We take breaks along the way.
You’ve got good chances to see monkeys (howler, spider, capuchin), sloths, colorful birds like toucans, reptiles—even tiny frogs if you look closely.
Yes! We provide fresh local fruit during a break on the trail. Bring your own water bottle though—it gets hot out there.
No special gear needed—we lend binoculars for spotting wildlife. Just wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can get muddy.
You’ll get use of binoculars for spotting animals and enjoy some fresh tropical fruit during our break by the beach. Our guide leads you through both forest and coastal paths—just bring comfy shoes and your curiosity!
