If you want to swim under a real waterfall, see sloths up close, and eat local food—all in one day—this tour covers it all without feeling rushed.
The drive out from Guanacaste started before sunrise—windows down, that thick Costa Rican air rolling in. Our driver gave a quick rundown on the day’s plan as we passed roadside fruit stands and sleepy villages. When we finally reached La Fortuna Waterfall, I could hear the rush of water before I even saw it. There’s no way around it: those 500 steps down are a workout. But the cool mist hits your face halfway down and you forget about your legs for a second. At the bottom, some folks waded right in, shoes off, while others just sat on the rocks snapping photos or catching their breath. The water’s colder than you’d expect—kind of wakes you up.
Next up was Ecocentro Danaus. Our guide, Luis, seemed to know every plant by name—he pointed out a tiny red-eyed tree frog tucked under a leaf and showed us where sloths usually nap (we actually spotted one curled up high above). The walk itself is easy—flat paths, lots of shade—and there’s this constant hum of insects and birds overhead. Butterflies everywhere too; one landed on my backpack for half the trail. It felt less like a zoo and more like wandering through someone’s backyard jungle.
Before heading back, we stopped in town for souvenirs and a few quick photos—the main street’s got these bright murals and little shops selling wood carvings and coffee beans. Lunch was at Rancho Perla: three choices on the menu (I went with casado—rice, beans, plantains). The place smells like grilled chicken and fresh cilantro when you walk in. After eating, everyone just sort of lounged around chatting until it was time to pile back into the van.
There are about 500 steps down (and back up), so it takes moderate fitness. You can take breaks along the way if needed.
Yes! Swimming is allowed at the base of the waterfall. The water is cool but refreshing after the walk down.
Lunch is included at Rancho Perla with vegetarian and gluten-free choices available.
You’ll have a good chance—guides are great at spotting wildlife—but sightings can’t be guaranteed since animals roam freely.
Your day includes private air-conditioned transport with WiFi onboard, bottled water throughout, entrance fees for all activities, plus lunch with several menu options (including vegetarian and gluten-free). Specialized infant seats are available if you need them—just let us know ahead of time.
