experience

What’s the experience like?

“Try saying ‘ma kulenda’,” our guide Li grinned, waiting for us to repeat it. I totally mangled the word — Li laughed and so did the woman selling fruit nearby, her hands still dusted with flour from making arepas. We’d just arrived in San Basilio de Palenque after a bumpy ride out from Cartagena (the van’s radio played champeta the whole way), and already I could feel how different this place was — slower, warmer somehow, like everyone had time to look you in the eye.

Walking through the village, Li pointed out murals splashed across faded walls — faces of ancestors, boxing gloves for Kid Pambelé (I didn’t know he was a world champ until today), and Benkos Biohó standing tall in bronze. The air smelled faintly of wood smoke and something sweet I couldn’t place. Kids darted past us barefoot, calling out in Palenquero. At one point we stopped by a tiny herb stall; the woman there crushed leaves between her fingers so we could smell them — sharp and grassy, almost medicinal. She explained which ones were for headaches or heartbreaks (I liked that she didn’t rush).

Lunch was fish with coconut rice and salad — honestly, I’m still thinking about that coconut rice. The cook told us she’d won an award for her recipes but shrugged it off like it was nothing special. After eating we joined a group under a mango tree where drums started up — not a performance exactly, more like an invitation to join in if you felt brave enough. My rhythm was hopeless but nobody seemed to mind; someone handed me maracas anyway.

The drive back to Cartagena felt quieter than the morning. Maybe it was just me replaying bits of conversation or that moment when everyone started laughing at my dancing (fair). There’s something about Palenque that sticks — not just stories or monuments but how people greet you like you’ve always belonged there.
