Summary

Medellin’s past through Escobar sites stories of loss and resilience

You’ll walk Medellin’s streets with a local guide who doesn’t sugarcoat anything—visit Monaco park honoring victims, see Escobar’s grave among politicians, climb the rooftop where his story ended, and wander through Barrio Pablo Escobar as life goes on around you. Expect moments of silence, tough history, and glimpses of how Medellin keeps moving forward.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel much when we pulled up to the old Monaco building in Medellin, but the air there is heavy in a way you can’t really describe. Our guide, Andrés, just let us stand for a minute before he started talking. There’s this huge tribute now where Escobar’s penthouse used to be — not about him, but about everyone else. I remember the smell of wet grass (it had rained earlier), and a group of school kids passing by, laughing loud enough to echo against the concrete. It felt strange, honestly — like this city refuses to let one story define it.

We drove through traffic that seemed to have its own rhythm (horns, vendors weaving between cars) until we reached the cemetery. I was surprised how ordinary Pablo Escobar’s grave looked — right next to politicians and other families. Andrés told us how people used to leave flowers or even cigarettes here; now it’s mostly quiet except for the wind and a few curious visitors. He pointed out Griselda Blanco’s grave too — “the Black Widow,” he said, shaking his head. I tried reading some names on nearby stones but my Spanish is hopeless.

The rooftop at Los Olivos was something else. You climb these narrow stairs (paint peeling under your hand) and suddenly you’re standing where everything ended for Escobar. The city looks so normal from up there — laundry flapping on balconies, dogs barking below — but Andrés just let us sit in silence for a bit. He asked if we thought it mattered who fired the shot that day; I still don’t know what I think about that. Afterward we stopped by Barrio Pablo Escobar, which he founded himself — kids playing soccer in alleys painted with bright murals.

I keep thinking about those murals and how people here talk about moving forward without forgetting what happened. It wasn’t comfortable all the time (some stories are rough), but maybe that’s why this tour sticks with me more than most.
