experience

What’s the experience like?

Stepping off the ship, I could already feel the buzz of Tianjin—there’s this salty river breeze that hits you as soon as you get close to the city center. Our guide met us right at the port exit, holding a little sign with my name (always a relief). The drive into town was smooth; we passed clusters of locals biking to work and tiny fruit stalls tucked under plane trees. First stop: the Porcelain House. From the outside, it’s wild—every inch covered in broken ceramics and old vases, even the roof has this huge dragon made out of porcelain shards. Inside, there’s this odd hush, like everyone’s tiptoeing around not to break anything. My favorite bit? Spotting a mosaic Mona Lisa tucked between jade carvings and old Republic-era vases stacked along what they call the “peace wall.”

Later on, we wandered through Ancient Culture Street. It’s noisy in a good way—vendors calling out, kids chasing each other past shops painted with scenes from old legends. You’ll see clay figurines everywhere (the famous Clay Figure Zhang ones), and if you’re lucky, catch an old man painting them by hand right in his shop window. We ducked into a tea house for a quick cup; jasmine scent everywhere and those little blue-and-white cups that never seem to cool down fast enough.

The Wudadao area feels different—quieter streets lined with European-style villas from another era. The museum here is small but packed with photos and artifacts tracing Tianjin’s place in China’s modern history. Our guide pointed out photos showing how foreign embassies shaped these blocks over 100 years ago; I’d never realized how international Tianjin once was.

We wrapped up at the Tianjin Eye, which sits right over Yongle Bridge—honestly, it looks even bigger up close than in pictures. The ride takes about 25 minutes for one full circle; you get these wide views over the Hai River and city rooftops (best just before sunset if you can time it). Even if heights aren’t your thing, just watching its reflection ripple in the water below is worth it.
