The experience
Three routes mean three different sides of the city. The Hong Kong Island route (red) runs from Central Star Ferry Pier through Man Mo Temple, the Mid-Levels Escalator and up to the Peak Tram station. The Stanley route (green) heads south to Stanley Market, Repulse Bay and Aberdeen Harbour, passing Ocean Park along the way. The Kowloon route (blue) covers the north side: Temple Street Night Market, the Wholesale Fruit Market, M+ Museum and Hong Kong Palace Museum. You pick which route to ride and which stops to leave the bus, so a morning can be Stanley and a late afternoon can be Temple Street if that is how the day unfolds.
The bus itself is open-top, and the audio guide runs in English, Spanish, Italian, French and five other languages: switch it on or off at each stop. The Big Bus Tours app stores your ticket, shows you where the next bus is in real time, and lets you board with your phone instead of a paper slip. A Star Ferry ticket is included with every pass, so you can cross the harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon without buying a separate one. If you take the 48-hour option, you can add a Peak Tram ride, a water taxi tour or a sampan houseboat experience: one of those three, your choice.
The ticket is valid for 24 or 48 consecutive hours from activation, which you do through the app. Hop off, spend two hours at a market or a temple, hop back on the next bus that comes. There is no guide on board narrating the route (the audio commentary is what you listen to), and no fixed itinerary to follow. Children under 3 ride free (one per paying adult). Anyone from 3 up needs a ticket. The buses run all day, and you can switch between the three routes as many times as you want within your window.
