You’ll cycle through Punta Arenas’ oldest neighborhoods with local guides who know every corner. Expect colorful houses, street art, real stories—and a fresh look at this Patagonian city.
I hopped on a sturdy mountain bike right by the Punta Arenas waterfront—those big white letters make it easy to spot the meeting point. The wind off the Strait was sharp that morning, but our guide, Nico, handed out reflective harnesses and helmets before we set off. He’s lived here all his life and knows every shortcut and mural in town.
We pedaled away from the busy center into neighborhoods most tourists never see. The houses here are painted all sorts of colors—some roofs bright red or blue, others faded from years of Patagonian weather. At one corner, a street vendor was frying sopaipillas; you could smell the dough even over the sea breeze. Nico stopped us by a wall covered in local graffiti art and explained how these murals tell stories about the city’s past and its original peoples.
There were a few hills, nothing too tough with 27 gears to play with. From up high, you get this wide view of Punta Arenas—ships in the harbor, rows of multicolored homes stretching toward the horizon. We paused at a tiny “local bite” shop for a snack (included), then Nico shared how these neighborhoods grew as people came for work in sheep farming or shipping. By the end, I felt like I’d seen a side of Punta Arenas most folks miss—and understood why this city exists where it does.
