Summary

Kayaking the Liucura: Rapids, laughter, and volcano views in Pucón

You’ll join a small group for a guided kayak trip down Pucón’s Liucura River—learning from locals, paddling past waterfalls and wildflowers, feeling both thrill and calm as you master gentle rapids together. With all gear provided plus pickup and photos included, it’s an experience you’ll remember long after your feet are dry.

experience

What’s the experience like?

When we met our guide, Matías, he was already grinning at us from the back of his pickup — wetsuits slung over one arm, paddle in the other. He handed me my helmet and said something about “the river being in a good mood today,” which made me laugh (and also wonder what it meant if it wasn’t). The drive out from Pucón was short but bumpy; I kept catching glimpses of Villarica volcano through the window, its snowy top looking almost fake against the sky. There was this earthy smell in the air — wet grass and woodsmoke from somewhere nearby. I remember thinking: this feels like the start of something that’ll stick with me.

I’d never been on a sit-on-top kayak before, so when Matías showed us how to wedge our feet just right and not panic if we tipped (he promised he’d fish us out), I tried to look braver than I felt. The first splash into the Liucura River was colder than expected — like someone had dunked my toes in glacier water. But then we were off, paddling past banks tangled with wildflowers and those little blue kingfishers darting low over the surface. At one point, Matías pointed out a hidden waterfall behind some rocks; you could barely hear it over the rush of water until you got close enough for the spray to hit your face. He told us locals call it “la voz del río.” I probably butchered my attempt at saying it back — he laughed anyway.

The rapids weren’t huge but they were enough to get my heart going. There’s this moment where you stop thinking about anything except what’s right in front of you — white foam, sunlight flickering on the water, everyone yelling directions or just laughing because someone spun around backwards (okay, that was me). In between, there were calmer stretches where we drifted and watched for salmon or just let ourselves float under branches heavy with moss. It felt less like a tour and more like being let in on some local secret.

By the time we clambered out — soaked but weirdly warm inside those neoprene suits — Matías handed us hot tea from his thermos while someone else scrolled through photos he’d snapped along the way (somehow he caught my best “I’m totally not scared” face). I still think about that view upstream: river curling away into green hills, volcano watching over everything. Not sure I’ll ever see water quite that color again.
