You’ll trek through Guatin Canyon’s cactus forest and cool off in natural pools before coasting 23km downhill by bike into San Pedro de Atacama. If you want real adventure away from crowds—with awesome guides and local flavor—this is your day.
The morning air up at 3200 meters hits different—crisp, a little thin, but you wake up fast. We piled out of the van just as the sun started warming the canyon walls. Our guide, Felipe, handed out helmets and checked our Marlin bikes while we stretched and took in the view. There’s this earthy smell from the riverbed mixed with something sweet—maybe those big cacti flowers? You’ll hear water trickling somewhere below, even before you see it.
The trek winds through Guatin Canyon, right where the giant cacti stand like silent guards. Some are taller than a bus. We hopped rocks, crossed shallow streams (my shoes got soaked—worth it), and found these little pools where you can actually take a dip if you’re brave enough for cold water. Felipe pointed out tiny lizards sunning themselves on the rocks. Not many folks around here; it feels like your own secret spot in San Pedro de Atacama.
After a snack break—local nuts and fruit—we switched gears for the downhill ride back to town. The first few kilometers are pure adrenaline: hairpin turns, wide-open desert views, wind in your face. It’s not all speed though; sometimes we slowed down just to watch wild vicuñas grazing or snap photos of the valley opening up below us. By the time we rolled into San Pedro’s edge, legs tired but grinning, I felt like I’d seen a side of Atacama most people miss.
Yes! The hike is moderate and the bike descent is guided with safety gear provided. Some basic fitness helps, but no advanced skills needed.
