The Experience

"The crater, she shows you everything about this island," our guide said as we stood at the rim, and he wasn't exaggerating. The hike starts with a drive through the mountains to Cova Natural Park, where you arrive at Cape Verde's largest volcanic crater — Cova de Paúl — sitting at 1,100 meters above sea level. The crater itself is an extinct volcano, and what makes it extraordinary is what's inside: a massive green plain used for farming, surrounded by sheer walls of rock. You get a few minutes to take in that view before the real trek begins.

Then comes the 3.5-hour descent. The path zigzags down via stone steps, and it's steep enough that you feel it in your legs, but the views make you stop and stare anyway. As you drop into the valley, the landscape changes — you move through Cape Verde's greenest region, spotting mango trees, coconuts, banana plantations, and abandoned vineyards that tell the story of what people used to grow here. The guide points out native plants and explains how the valley stays so lush when the rest of the island is dry. About halfway down, you reach the grogue distillery, where they make the local rum. If you're there between January and May, you can watch the production and taste it — the grogue is strong and tastes like it comes from someone's backyard, which it kind of does.

The final stretch takes you past small villages — Sinagoga, Vila das Pombas, Janela — before the drive back to your accommodation. The whole day is about 6 hours from pickup to drop-off, and you'll feel the hike in your calves the next morning, but the crater view and that descent through the green valley stay with you longer.
