Ever wondered if you’d actually laugh out loud getting soaked by glacier water? That was me, clutching my paddle on the Athabasca River just outside Jasper, thinking I’d be nervous but mostly grinning like an idiot. Our guide, Dave (who’s lived here forever), handed out these bright yellow jackets that smelled faintly of rubber and river—honestly, not unpleasant. The drive to the put-in point was quick, maybe ten minutes south of town, but enough for me to start second-guessing my paddling skills. My nephew kept asking if we’d see bears. (We didn’t.)

I liked how the trip started slow—a gentle float where you could actually look around and see mountains in every direction. The air had that sharp pine-and-cold-water smell you only get up here. Dave pointed out a bald eagle circling above us and then gave us the safety talk (which he made sound way less scary than I expected). When we hit those first grade 2 rapids, it was more fun than wild—enough splash to wake you up but not enough to send anyone flying overboard. One kid squealed every time we bounced; his dad just laughed and tried not to fall in.

The best bit? Where the Miette River joined in—you could literally see two different colors mixing together right next to the raft. Dave explained why one side looked almost milky-blue from glacier melt while the other was darker from rainwater. It’s weird what sticks with you; I still think about that color line sometimes when I see rivers back home. We ended at Old Fort Point, peeled off our wet gear (socks squelching), and piled into the van for a short ride back to Jasper. Honestly, I didn’t want it to be over yet—but my arms were glad for the break.
