What’s included

Your day includes pickup in Calgary, bottled water throughout the journey so you don’t have to worry about packing extra drinks, entry tickets to the Royal Tyrrell Museum so you can walk right in without waiting around outside—and if you’re traveling with kids or infants they’ll sort out car seats for you ahead of time if you ask.

The drive out from Calgary was longer than I expected, but our guide (I think his name was Mark?) kept tossing out stories about dinosaur digs and old mining towns. The land just sort of opens up—flat, then suddenly those weird striped canyons at Horseshoe Canyon. We stepped out and the air felt dry, almost dusty, like you could taste the sandstone if you breathed deep enough. There was this one family already there, their little kid scrambling down into the rocks—I hesitated but ended up following. You get red dust on your shoes that never really comes off.

I didn’t expect to actually climb inside a dinosaur today, but that’s what you do at Drumheller’s World’s Largest Dinosaur. It’s kitschy but I loved it—my knees wobbled a bit on those metal stairs, and when you poke your head out of its mouth, everything below looks tiny. Mark told us locals joke about “T-Rex breath” on windy days. After that we stopped at the Royal Tyrrell Museum—honestly, I lost track of time in there. The skeletons are huge and there’s this one room where it’s almost dark except for spotlights on these ancient bones. It gave me chills for a second.

Lunch was quick (grabbed something at a café near the museum), then we squeezed into the Little Church—a real church but barely bigger than my kitchen back home. Someone tried to sing and it echoed in this funny way. Later we crossed the Rosedale Suspension Bridge; it swayed more than I liked, but the river below was calm and brownish green, quiet except for someone laughing behind us because I wouldn’t let go of the rail.

The Hoodoos themselves look stranger up close—like melting candles or giant chess pieces left out in the rain for centuries. The wind whistles between them and if you touch one, it feels rough and cool even under sun. We ended up in this half-abandoned ghost town with an old saloon (the Last Chance)—there were two guys playing cards inside who nodded when we came in, like we’d just wandered onto their movie set or something. On the ride back to Calgary I watched red dust settle on my jeans and thought about how much history is buried under all that quiet land—you know?
