Summary

Hike Rio’s Tijuca trails for city views, caves and waterfall swims

You’ll trek through Rio’s Tijuca Forest with a local guide—climbing peaks for city views, exploring cool caves lit by sunlight, then cooling off under a real rainforest waterfall. Expect wildlife sightings (if you’re lucky), stories from your guide, and that feeling of being far away from everything—even though you’re still in Rio.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We started off in Rio, our little group piling into an air-conditioned van (blessed relief from that sticky morning heat). Our guide, Lucas, was already cracking jokes about Carioca time. I remember the first thing I noticed when we entered Tijuca Forest — this almost sweet, earthy smell, like wet leaves after rain. It’s hard to believe you’re still inside the city. We hiked up towards Pedra Bonita — not too tough but enough to get your heart going. At one point Lucas pointed out a toucan overhead; I missed it because I was busy catching my breath and pretending not to be winded. So it goes.

The view from the top — well, you can see all of Rio sprawled out below: beaches curling along the edge, Christ the Redeemer way off in the haze. We hung around up there longer than planned just because nobody wanted to leave. On the way back down, Lucas led us through these narrow trails where everything felt damp and alive. There was this cave — honestly bigger than I expected — with light pouring in from above and echoey drips somewhere in the dark. My shoes slipped on the rocks a bit but I didn’t care; it felt like something out of an old adventure movie.

I think my favorite part was stumbling onto that waterfall at the end. You could hear it before you saw it — that low rumble through the trees. The water was freezing but after hiking under that heavy green canopy it just felt right to jump in. Some folks took photos; I just floated for a minute staring up at all that tangled forest above me. Even now, weeks later, sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic or scrolling my phone too much, I think about how quiet it got there except for birds and water and us laughing about nothing important.
