You’ll fly in a private helicopter over Rio de Janeiro with a local pilot, gliding past Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain and more iconic sights. Feel your heart race as you spot hidden beaches from above and catch those postcard views in real life—this is one memory that lingers long after landing.
“That’s Christ the Redeemer, right there!” our pilot shouted over the headset, but honestly, my stomach was still catching up from takeoff. I looked out and—yeah, there he was, arms wide open in the morning haze. The city looked soft from up here, almost like a painting. You could see all these little boats dotting Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon below, and the sun glinting off their hulls. I kept trying to snap photos but half the time I just stared out the window with my mouth open like a tourist (which, okay, I am).
We banked left over Copacabana Beach—those famous curves you see in every postcard, but they’re so much wider and whiter in real life. Our guide (I think his name was Paulo?) pointed out Ipanema too, and laughed when I mixed up the two beaches. There were people already setting up umbrellas even though it wasn’t even noon yet. The air inside the chopper smelled faintly of fuel and something sweet—maybe sunscreen? Or maybe that was just my nerves.
I didn’t expect Red Beach to look so tucked away at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. Paulo said locals come here for quieter afternoons. From above, Sugarloaf is less intimidating—just this massive chunk of rock jutting into blue water. We circled once and he told us to look down at Mureta da Urca where people snack with their feet dangling over the edge. For a second everything went quiet except for the hum of blades overhead.
The whole thing lasted maybe 30 minutes but it felt longer—in a good way. Seeing Rio de Janeiro by helicopter is nothing like wandering its streets; it’s more like floating through someone else’s dream for a bit. When we landed, my hands were shaky but I couldn’t stop grinning. Still can’t really believe we did that.
