experience

What’s the experience like?

Hands gripping the harness, I heard someone below shout “Go!” — and then I was flying. The zipline cut through the Belizean forest so fast that for a second, all I caught was green blur and the whoop of our guide, Luis. He’d just told us about his grandmother’s stories of jaguars in these trees (I tried to spot one, but honestly I was too busy trying not to scream). Landing on the next platform, my legs wobbled a bit. The air smelled like wet leaves and something sweet — maybe wild orchids? Luis laughed when he saw my face. “You made it,” he said. “Now you’re ready for the river.”

We swapped helmets for life vests and hiked down a muddy path, tubes bouncing against our hips. The cave entrance looked like something out of a movie — dark, cool air rolling out, making goosebumps rise even though it was humid outside. Floating into the cave was weirdly peaceful after all that adrenaline. Water lapped at the sides of my tube and every sound echoed: our voices got swallowed up by the dark. At one point Luis pointed out some stalagmites shaped like candles (he had names for half the rocks in there). I kept drifting behind because I wanted to touch the walls — they felt slick and cold, almost alive.

Lunch came after we dried off — chicken stewed with rice and beans, with a bottle of orange soda that tasted better than any fancy cocktail back home. Everyone sat together under this big tarp while Luis told us about growing up nearby. Somebody asked if he ever got bored of caves; he just grinned and shook his head. There was mud on my shoes and my hair smelled like river water, but honestly? That felt right.
