On this private Nassau tour you’ll sip local rum punch (“sip slow”), learn Caribbean dance moves with your guide, taste chocolate and wine made on the island, visit Bob Marley’s former home, and relax at Cable Beach with snorkels or inflatables — all set to reggae rhythms you’ll remember long after you leave.
I’ll be honest — I thought I knew what a “rum tour” meant, but this Nassau day trip was nothing like the usual. The second we piled into the van, our guide (her name was Tia — sharp laugh, bright nails) handed us these sweating cups of something called “sip slow.” It tasted sweet and dangerous at the same time. Someone cranked up the reggae and suddenly we were all swaying, even before we’d left the parking lot. I’m not sure who started singing first. Maybe it was me.
First stop: a cigar factory. The air inside was thick with tobacco and something else — maybe pride? The torcedores moved so fast with their hands that I just stood there watching until Tia nudged me to try rolling one myself. (Mine looked more like a lumpy breadstick than a cigar.) After that came chocolate — real Bahamian stuff, rich and almost bitter. I still think about that taste when I see those shiny wrappers in airport shops.
The wine tasting at the next stop surprised me — who knew you could get good wine on an island? We tried three blends; I liked the one that smelled faintly of guava, though my friend said it reminded her of sunscreen (she meant it as a compliment). By then, everyone was loose enough to attempt some dance moves in the van. Tia tried to teach us a step or two but mostly just laughed at our attempts.
The highlight for me was standing in Bob Marley’s old house — faded posters on the wall, sunlight slanting through dusty windows. There was this quiet moment where nobody spoke; even the music outside seemed softer for a second. Then someone spotted Rita Marley’s signature in a guestbook and we all crowded around like kids.
We ended up at Cable Beach with sand stuck to our ankles and sticky fingers from cake samples (banana was my favorite). Some people snorkeled; others just floated on inflatables, humming along to whatever song Tia had playing from her phone. I didn’t expect to feel so light by the end — maybe it was the rum punch or maybe just being around people who let go for an afternoon. Either way, I’d do it again if only for that last hour under the sun.
