You’ll paddle clear waters alongside playful sea lions and maybe spot dolphins too. Choose between exploring Penguin Island or rugged Point Peron—either way, it’s a real slice of Western Australia’s wild coast with everything sorted for you.
The first thing I noticed pulling up to Shoalwater Islands Marine Park was the salty breeze—just a hint of seaweed mixed in. Our guide, Dave, handed out bright yellow life jackets and double kayaks that looked sturdy enough for anything. We set off early, the water glassy and cool under the paddle. It’s not every day you get to float this close to wild Australian sea lions; they lounged on Seal Island’s rocks, barely glancing up as we drifted by. One young pup slid into the water and zipped around our kayaks—honestly, it felt like he was showing off.
Depending on the season, you’ll either head toward Penguin Island or Point Peron after Seal Island. We picked Penguin Island—tiny, but packed with bird chatter and the odd squawk from a little penguin if you’re lucky. The sun got pretty warm by midday, so I was glad for my hat (and that Dave had extra sunscreen). Lunch was simple but hit the spot: sandwiches and fruit eaten right on the sand while watching dolphins arc through the bay. If you’re coming from Perth CBD, there’s an easy pickup option—or just drive yourself down like I did; parking’s not too bad if you arrive early.
