experience

What’s the experience like?

I woke up in Adelaide still tasting the coffee from yesterday, but by the time we rolled into the Barossa Valley, it was all about that cool morning air and the smell of eucalyptus. Our guide — Mark, who somehow managed to be both hilarious and genuinely passionate about wine — pointed out old stone cottages between rows of vines. First stop: Maggie Beer’s farm shop. I’d seen her on TV but didn’t expect the place to feel so homey, with shelves stacked high with jams and that earthy scent of fresh bread. Tried a quince paste I can’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried), then wandered outside where ducks paddled around like they owned the place.

Chateau Tanunda was next — honestly, it looked like something out of a postcard, but less tidy. The sandstone felt warm under my hand and inside it was all polished wood and laughter echoing off high ceilings. We tasted a shiraz that lingered longer than I expected (in a good way). Mark told us stories about winemakers who’d been here forever; you could tell he knew them personally. Kies Family Wines felt smaller, more like someone’s living room than a cellar door. Their dog kept sneaking around our ankles while we tried their cabernet — not sure which one of us enjoyed it more.

By lunchtime I was ready for something solid and thankfully it came paired with another glass (or two) at a winery table overlooking vines that just kept going. There was this moment when everyone went quiet except for the clink of cutlery and birds somewhere nearby — I still think about that view sometimes. After lunch we headed to Hahndorf; suddenly everything turned German. Timber shopfronts, cuckoo clocks everywhere, people greeting each other in half-English half-something-else. Sat down at Haus Restaurant for coffee and cake (the apple strudel is worth the hype). Honestly, I didn’t want to leave yet — but maybe that’s just how these days go.
