Summary

Walk ancient monasteries, hidden caves and castle halls in Lori

You’ll step into centuries-old monasteries at Haghpat and Sanahin, wander through forested caves at Zarni-Parni, share lunch with local flavors, and feel echoes of history in Akhtala fortress and Aramyants Castle—all with an expert guide who brings every story alive.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I woke up with that weird mix of nerves and excitement—Lori region always felt like a name from a storybook to me. We were barely out of Vanadzor when the driver handed out pastries (still warm, smelled faintly of honey) and our guide Anna started sharing bits about Haghpat. She pointed out the old scriptorium as we walked in—there’s this hush inside, like the stone walls are holding their breath. I tried tracing the carvings with my fingers but got distracted by a group of local kids playing tag around the bell tower. The air was cool even though it was June, and I remember thinking how the grass here just feels softer somehow.

Next stop was Zarni-Parni cave complex—a short drive but it felt like we’d crossed into another world. The forest canyon was still damp from last night’s rain; you could smell earth and wood smoke drifting from somewhere below. Inside the caves it’s darker than you expect, but Anna flicked on her phone torch and showed us old tools—she joked that if we ever lost WiFi again we’d need to learn how to use them. Lunch was at this tavern near the caves—thick bread, something like lamb stew, and homemade wine that tasted sharp at first sip but mellowed out quick. I probably ate too much but honestly didn’t regret it.

Akhtala fortress is wild—the ramparts look like they grew straight out of the rock. There were two old men arguing in Armenian at the gate (Anna translated: “He says his grandfather built this wall.” “He says his grandfather fixed it.”), which made everyone laugh. The churches inside are painted floor to ceiling; you can smell candle wax and dust if you stand still long enough. Aramyants Castle came after—a faded grandeur kind of place, all arches and stories about opera singers and poets visiting for the air. I kept thinking about how many lives had passed through those halls.

Sanahin monastery was our last stop—the light was starting to go gold by then. There’s something about standing between those ancient stones with Debed river down below that makes you quiet for a minute or two. Anna let us wander off on our own for a bit; I ended up sitting on a low wall just listening to birds and distant voices from the village. It’s strange what sticks with you after a day like this—I still think about that silence sometimes when things get noisy back home.
