What’s included

Your day includes pickup at your hotel or chosen spot in Tirana, all fuel and parking fees covered, an English-speaking local guide leading every step (and sharing stories), plus comfortable transport through mountain roads before returning you safely back to town by evening.

I didn’t really know what to expect from a day trip to the Albanian Alps — I’d seen photos but they never quite get the feeling right. Our guide, Ardit, met us in Tirana just as the city was waking up (he had that calm “we’ve got all day” energy). We piled into the van and after about two hours — with some bumpy roads and a lot of sheep traffic — we stopped in Shkodra for coffee. The café smelled like strong espresso and cigarette smoke; I watched locals argue gently over backgammon while we stretched our legs.

The drive into the mountains was something else. The air changed — colder, sharper — and everything felt impossibly green. We pulled over at one point so Ardit could show us the view down into the valley; he pointed out peaks with names I couldn’t pronounce (I tried one and he laughed). There was this silence up there except for cowbells somewhere below. Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I need to clear my head.

When we reached Theth village it felt like time slowed down. Old stone houses, laundry flapping on lines, kids chasing chickens. We walked from the little church to the Reconciliation Tower — Ardit explained how families used to settle blood feuds there (which sounded medieval but weirdly hopeful). Then came the part I’d been nervous about: hiking to the Blue Eye. It’s about 45 minutes through forest and along a river that looks fake-blue in places. My boots got muddy but no one cared; everyone just sort of fell into step together.

The Blue Eye itself is freezing cold if you dip your hand in (I did — instant regret). We sat by the water for ages eating sandwiches and listening to nothing but birds and river noise. On the way back my legs were jelly but it didn’t matter. There’s something about being tired in fresh air that makes you feel lighter somehow.
